Best Movie on Basic Cable This Week

Garland, Mason Both Shine in 1954 Musical Remake of A STAR IS BORN

One of the great Hollywood musicals (and one of the few remakes that's actually superior to the original film) 1954's A STAR IS BORN was a multi-million-dollar project that was butchered by its studio after its premiere. To cram an extra show in each day, exex at Warners cut out about 30 minutes from STAR, thus costing it all six Oscars for which it was nominated. A "restored" version (putting back two musical numbers and more) airs Thursday on TCM.

Best Hoaky Movie on Basic Cable

Joan Crawford Typecast as 16- Cylinder Bitch in 1955's QUEEN BEE

Few actresses could play total bitches with the sincerity and ease of Joan Crawford, and this "gift" is on full display in the 1955 melodrama QUEEN BEE. In it, Joan plays a preying-mantis-like matriarch who gleefully destroys everyone around her -- along with a roomful of bric-a-brac in one memorable scene. Justifying everything Christina said of her in MOMMIE DEAREST, BEE errs Thursday on TCM.

Weakened Box Office: May 10-12, 2013

IRON MAN 3 Kicks GREAT GATSBY in His Oh-So-Perfect Teeth, Stays #1

To the surprise of no one except Baz Luhrmann, the latest remake of GREAT GATSBY couldn't knock IRON MAN 3 off its box office throne. The 3-quel kept the top spot, out-grossing the Classic Novel in 3-D by a margin of about 45%. Poor word-of-mouth and less-than-kind reviews left PEEPLES down in 4th, and BIG WEDDING has now grossed more than half of what it cost. For complete B.O. MoJo weekend chart, CLICK HERE.

Will The New, Mega-Budget GREAT GATSBY Make Its Money Back??

F. Scott FItzgerald's signature novel THE GREAT GATSBY has now been filmed 6 times...and all previous incarnations went down in flames at the box office. The $127 million 2013 version, starring Leonardo diCaprio and directed by Baz Luhrmann, looks poised to do the same. Early reviews have been unkind, and want-to-see is hardly stratospheric.
