Would anyone take any of the "Lord of the Rings" movies seriously if all of a sudden some character told everyone that they are in the middle of a fairy tale ... and everyone belived him!? "We have to get rid of the One Ring, not because the fate of Middle Earth depends on it, but because that's what happens in the novels and we must go along with whatever was written in them!".

See, that's when the movie starts to become a parody, and that's where "LITW" nuked the fridge, so to speak. I can accept creatures from another world visiting our planet, I have no problem with that. But normal, everyday people accepting that they are not living in the real world, they are all part of some bedtime story (or in the critic's case, a movie) that is being played out, AND, they believe this because some naked girl in a shower tells them so ... that's where I draw a line, as did many critics and audience members, too.

Yeah, that's my entire point.

Well, you do have a point there ... oh no, wait, you don't! OOPS, sorry, but thanks for playing!

Game show host jokes aside, I can understand why Nolan had to cast Watanabe in this role. 1. Nolan does repeat casting in most of his movies (Michael Caine any one?). 2. I highly doubt that Warner Bros. would be willing to let Nolan cast just any Japanese actor in to a major supporting role in a major motion picture, it had to be someone that American movie goers knew and has had great work on his resume (say like being an Oscar nominated actor and starring in three Oscar nominated movies), so Watanabe fit the bill. Yes, his accent and speech patterns were hard to understand at times, but they were by no means intended to be racist in nature. The same CAN NOT be said about the Asian girl in "LITW". Need proof? Watch Mickey Roony in "Breaskfast At Tiffany's", whose role is universally considered the most racist portrayal of an Asian character in the history of Hollywood movie making. He sounded just like the girl in "LITW" did. The only difference between the two roles, at least "LITW" bothered to hire a person of actual Asian descent.

And there's no flaw in hating the movie because it's all about M. Night writing a love letter to himself. The subtext is not "no one really knows their role in life is" or "everyone has a reason for being", it's clearly "I'm M. Night f***ing Shyamalan, the greatest thing to happen to motion pictures in the past decade! Any critic who disagrees with me is a douche and should die, my writing will make me immortal, and I can make a movie based on bedtime stories I tell my kids because I am that damn good!". But to you, denial ("Da Nile") is just a river in Egypt.

And the FACTS still rest, he won 2 Razzies for that movie, this movie was a critical failure and is all but forgotten now, it damaged his public image, and was the beginning of the downward spiral that his career is now in.

Night by the movie industry at large.

I know you think M. Night is a god among morals, but to many, his movies are becoming one failure after another. I understand you like said performance here or said scene there, but to the rest of us here, these things are like diamonds inside of a cowpie. Yes, they are nice diamonds, but the overpowering stink of the cow s*** makes it hard for us to see the diamonds. You can easily see the diamonds through the s***, but we don't single out a performance here or a scene there, we judge a movie as a whole.

I know every so many amount of months you like to come back here and defend "Village" or "LITW", or "Happening", but doing so HERE is an epic waste of time. You're not going to change anyone's mind about M. Night's failing career, or that he's not Razzie material, or that we should take back the Razzies he was awarded, etc.

You want to praise M. Night, do it on whatever fan sites he might have or on IMDb, because we just don't f***ing care about him at this site and you can rant on about how great you think he is, we're just going to roll our eyes about it. It's like the old joke goes, a man goes to his doctor and says "Doc, it hurts when I do this", and the doctor replies "Then don't do that". You don't want meaningless arguements about M. Night, then don't post about him here, because the Razzie verdict on him was casted long ago and it's not ever changing.

As I mentioned with Vits, although not all of these twists happened at the end, they are still twists that OVERSHADOW and/or ALTER the rest of the story. So regardless of where they are during the movie, M. Night's movies are full of overshadowing twists. And yes, M. Night's twists are his main selling point because he made the mistake of having them in EVERY movie he makes. As a result, twists have become his trademark and that is why people stopped going to his movies -- because ending with a big twist is no longer enough of an excuse to bother seeing his movies. And then he followedup by forgetting how to make a good movie in general.

But hey if you want to stop with this "Are not, are too" arguments about M. Night, simply stop defending him in a forum that thinks he's a joke! But no, you have to be a sucker for punishment and keep coming back for more.

LitW, as said several posts earlier, has a PLOT twist. You know the difference between a twist ENDING and a PLOT twist? Apparently, not. And did you see The Happening at all? They revealed that within 20 minutes of the freaking film. You're also missing MNS's first two films, which don't have twists. Thus, more than half of his films don't have twists.

And no, MNS's twist aren't the main selling point of his films. They are part of the story if you even bothered to pay attention to his films. But anyway, I can foresee that we're going to argue like "Are not!" and "Are too!" so it's pretty pointless arguing.

Oh, deny, deny, deny. Based on what I have read, MWG is one of those sensitive, in touch with his emotions kind of guys who loves a movie with tear-jerking, lump in the throat moments. And of course, M. Night has provided him with several movies fitting that description. But this hatred for Chris Nolan, what is that all about? I know what it is: jealousy and bitterness.
<P style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" =Msonormal>See, ten years ago, M. Night was on top of the world, making the Oscar worthy blockbuster, “Sixth Sense”. He was the golden boy, the next big thing, and nothing was going to stop him. A year or two later, along comes Nolan with the Oscar worthy art house masterpiece, “Memento”. Granted, M. Night had nothing to fear at the time because he was more the Hollywood guy while Nolan was more the indie guy.
<P style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" =Msonormal>Years passed and both writer/directors kept making movies, but then there was the turning point. M. Night fell on hard times with the back to back turkeys of the underperforming “Village” and the Razzie winning “Lady In The Water”, while Nolan’s career took off with “Batman Begins”. Just a mild setback for M. Night? NO! He followed up his two failures with his so-called “B Movie” and Razzie nominee “Happening” and then followed that up with the critically ravaged “Last Air Bender”. Meanwhile, Nolan had two back to back critical and commercial hits with “Dark Knight” and “Inception”. Oh yes, it was safe to say that M. Night’s reign as the golden boy came to an end and Nolan had taken the crown.
<P style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" =Msonormal>But why is MWG so bitter? Well, M. Night and Nolan are polar opposites, as different as day and night (no pun intended). M. Night, as I stated above, is all about the lump in the throat moments that MWG loves so dearly, with the moral or message that everything in life will turn out okay. Not so with Nolan, a man who some may claim is too intellectual for his own good. His movies tell the gloomy truth that life isn’t perfect or fair, and sometimes, there are no happy endings. Clearly MWG is attached to M. Night and considers his movies to speak directly to him. M. Night was the man of the hour, and MWG was one of his backers. But that’s not the case anymore. M. Night has fallen from grace, very, very far. And now Nolan is the new King. MWG, he’s just jealous of the success of the man who is the polar opposite of his hero, a man who is still respected by critics and audiences alike, while his hero is mocked at every turn.
<P style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" =Msonormal>So try as he might to discredit Nolan’s movies, the sad fact is MWG is talking to a brick wall. No one (ourside Vits, of course) will agree with him that M. Night still has talent left, that he’s not an egomaniac, or that his career will rise from the ashes. It’s too late now; too many bridges have been burned. Frankly, it’s rather sad that MWG can’t come to grip with the sad reality that he is of an ever shrinking minority who still thinks M. Night is a good filmmaker. And one can only imagine how further bitter he will become if (or when) “Last Air Bender” wins a good handful of Razzies next year.
