Most of the people I know who saw this movie were not just disappointed, they were disgusted.   You don't often find people angry at a movie because they generally stay away from movies they know they won't like. But previews of "Annapolis" looked interesting,  so a lot of people, including me, gave it a look.

  
It turned out to be bad, very bad. The plot was wrong, the dialog was wrong, the acting, well, there was no acting, the scenery was nice, but the acting...ah the heck with it.
It was just a bad movie!

Oh wait, there's more!   "sir, yes sir" is a quote referring to an officer.  An officer oversees a platoon's training, he does not do the training.

The actual physical training is done by Marine DIs, (drill instructors), who are non-coms specially trained.  They are patient, reserved, never, ever becoming personal, and always, (did I mention?) being very patient.

For Annapolis cadets, four years of grueling classroom work await them.  They are under constant harassment from those more senior to them, they are constantly learning to obey orders instantly.  They learn, easy or the hard way that in war, only the one who is willing to be led can become a leader.

Like so many movies of this genre, the writers miss the whole point of the training.  I recommend they that either join the military...or stick to writing intentional comedies.

I just watched the trailer!   I spotted and heard no less than five (5) lines/scenes from "An Officer and a Gentleman"  !!!

The main character is a social outcast, his DI is black and there is a female interest, who BTW should not be an interest according to official Navy regs.   AND:  gasp, surprise surprise, during a military crisis it's up to our hero fresh out of the academy to save the world!

BTW   calling Annapolis the toughest academy is stretching it.   I will admit I could never pass it's qualifications in math and high science,  but then that is never mentioned is it?   Are we supposed to assume he was a straight "A" student?   Based on qualities of leadership, community service and social interactions, this kid never would have been selected to even apply.

One curious plotpoint from this movie to note: The main character was driven to go to the Naval Academy because it was his dear departed mother's dream. She even dressed him in a sailor suit as a young boy.

Fortunately, she didn't adorn him in a pink cowboy hat, or we would have had to sit through Brokeback Mountain.
