The opening scene: The first scene of the movie is the only legitamitely scary scene in the whole movie.

 

John Leguizamo: John gives a decent performance. Of course, he's the first of the main characters to bite it.

 

 

Zooey Deschanel: This is the third review in a row to feature a bad performance from a hot chick. Pattern or coincidence? Probably the second one because the next two movies on Awesomely Bad Modern Movie Week feature good performances from hot chicks. That digression out of the way, her performance as Markie-Mark's wife Alma is just boring.

 

M. Night's vocal cameo: M. Night has a vocal cameo as a guy that Alam is cheating on Markie-Mark with. So, he wrote himself a part where his character has banged a hot chick. I beat his wife loved that part.

 

 

Mark Wahlberg: "Plastic. I'm talking to a plastic plant. I'm still doing it."

 

Betty Buckley: "You're trying to steal my lemon drink!"

 

M. Night Shaymalan: Creepy vocal cameo aside, his work on this movie is the definition of awesomely bad. I could go into details, but I can just mention that he wrote those two lines up there.

 

Shamwow needs to make more bad movies like this. Grade: C

Oh, and "Happening" was a piece of s*** that underperformed at the American box office, was ripped apart by critics, and got many Razzie nods. More facts from the anti-M. Night message board. Hint, hint ... or must I go back to the common sense examples again? Yeah, I admit, it wasn't his best. I wouldn't rank it up anywhere near "Inception", "Dark Knight" or "Memento". However, he has yet to make a movie so bad that every critic rips it to shreds, it barely breaks even at the box office, and the mere sight of his name makes audiences laugh or groan. When THAT happens, yes, I'll admit, he lost his touch.

As I said, if Chris Nolan makes a piece of s*** movie, I'm not making excuses for him. He f***ed up, plain and simple.  

 

We are watching Charlie Chaplin's films, Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind and others today, decades after their original release precisely because they didn't rely on being one trick ponies. There is a sublime quality of filmmaking, story telling and emotional appeal that draw us back to them generation after generation.

 

As for "Synecdoche, New York", well if no one has heard of it, how is it a classic? And as for the other Charlie Kaufman movies, their classic status is up in the air as well, because they might be well loved by critics and art film circles, but I doubt the general public feels the same way.
