Funny story: I have a friend who has connections with film distributors who tells me which movies will get theatrical release here and which ones won't. When he told me that the Best Foreign Film Oscar winner A SEPARATION was being released direct-to-DVD here, I rented it, and I loved it! Now, it appears in the movie listings in the newspaper. My friend told me that it's being shown in "art-house" cinemas. Doesn't matter, because it's still eligible for my Vits Awards.

Meanwhile, because of the success of movies like GRINDHOUSE, a Chilean movie called BRING ME THE HEAD OF THE MACHINE GUN WOMAN is trying to bring a new sub-genre: LatinXploitation (I didn't come up with that name).

Those 2 movies are among the new releases here, along with SAFE HAVEN. Oh, and also FAST & FURIOUS 6. What should I do?

I am not talking about Tree of Life being "booed," I am talking about the fact that the first 30 something reviews were almost exclusively negative. The Teen Choice Awards voting is now open. Among the nominees, there are 4 movies that were Razzie nominees/winners. And there's also a bunch of possible contenders for next year's ceremony.

For the first time in... ever, I'm satisfied with the nominees for the best in drama movies... even if teens probably didn't see most of them. But, for some reason, they've nominated some of 2013 most forgettable titles, such as PEEPLES. Oh, and since when is LES MIS a romantic movie?

So the cast for Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas has been annouced, and not only is Perry "whiting up" for this film (Tika Sumpter is the only other black cast member other than Tyler), but his cast also includes Chad Michael Murray (I guess he's making a kind of comeback?) and...

Since Seth MacFarlane won't host the Oscars again, and Tina Fey said she might not do it either... Who do you think should host? To avoid risks, I think they should go back to hiring 2 hosts. What say you guys?  

Also, Xbox announced yesterday that the HALO movie isn't happening after all. It'll be a TV series, produced by Steven Spielberg. 

And BEHIND THE CANDELABRA may not be so bad after all. It has just been nominated by the Critics' Choice Awards for Best TV Movie or Mini-Series and twice for Best Actor in a TV Movie or Mini-Series.

Looks kinda lame.
After Doctor Who, Star Trek is placed second on the list of longest running Science Fiction Shows on TV, with 14 seasons, if I remember correctly. Sounds like Into Darkness already won Travers over.

There's already a concensus on FAST & FURIOUS 6: it's as good as the previous one. Is it just me, or does it seem like these days, Friedberg and Seltzer are all bark and no bite? They now say they're making a Fast & Furious spoof -- but they were also supposed to make that Avatar spoof, which just vanished...and that Hunger Games spoof, which is, as far as I know, completed, but does not have a release date. I've also heard they're trying to make spoofs of things like Hangover, Bridesmaids, and Project X!

Nursing home rumble, eh? I'm afraid they're a bit behind. Weird All Yankovic did a "Theme From Rocky 13" (aka "Rye or the Kaiser") back in 1984. It was a parody of "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor.

Do you think maybe BEHIND THE CANDELABRA is not playing in theaters because the people behind it know that if it did, it would be trashed by critics...and razzed by us?  

RESPONSE from Head RAZZberry: Here's a LINK to read an extensive cover article from last Sunday'sL.A. Times CALENDAR section discussing how & why CANDELABRA ended up on HBO instead of in theatres (basically, it's that most major studio execs were chickensh*ts when it came to depicting the physical elements of Liberace's relationship with his "chauffeur"). My instincts tell me it could get HUGE ratings when it airs Memorial Day weekend, and that it probably would have done well in theatrical release...

Just got back from Star Trek Into Darkness. If not for some shaky-cam, I would have given it an A+. 

It'll have to settle for an "A" and being rated as my Best Film of the Year -- so far.

The problem with the Wild Bunch remake being about "aging cops" is that we still need cops. The original Wild Bunch took place at a time when cowboys were facing irrelevancy. The West was tamed, the temperance movement was gaining steam, the Indian Wars were over, and the frontier was closing.
