I just wanted to point out something that nobody else in this forum did: Although Gaspard Ulliel was bland, I still was relieved when I read the list of actors in consideration to play LECTER. It included Tom Sturridge, Razzie nominee Macaulay Culkin, and Razzie winner Hayden Christensen. I just can't imagine any of them being scary. Sturridge was "cutesy-creepy" in WAITING FOR FOREVER, which is so not the same. To be fair, I've never seen THE GOOD SON, so maybe Culkin could've pulled it off.
Then, it was Anthony Hopkins in the next three Hannibal Lecter films, The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Hannibal (2001), and Red Dragon (2002), and then, finally, this: Hannibal Rising (2007), in which 2 different actors played Hannibal, Aaron Thomas, who plays 8-year-old Hannibal, and Gaspard Ulliel, who plays the older Hannibal. Anyone who doesn't know who Gaspard Ulliel, well, he's a French actor, and has been in several French films. His dream was always to direct a movie, and after completing his studies at the lycée (French high school), he majored in cinema at the University of Saint-Denis. However, fate had other plans, and he is currently pursuing an acting career. He appeared in a mini TV film called "Une femme en blanc" (1997), and he was only 12 years old at that time. Then, he would make other French films before doing this one, Hannibal Rising, which was his first major English-language film. So there's some information to summon up for you all.

With such an amazing a brilliant Character (Hannibal Lector) to write off of and into and it just goes to waste, depressing really. and as far as the Pressure this actor has to live up to comment above, I personally think that if this actor had any sense at all he wouldve avoided the "pressure" with any smarts at all knowing that it could only go so far after the last installments. I can't fathom any respectable case as to why or how he would've thought picking up this role would've been a good idea, haha.

    Author: FilmCricket
Subject: 1669
Posted: February 10 2007 at 6:04am

Hannibal Rising is just as ill-conceived as the Star Wars prequels, but of course it won't do as much box office, although I presume expectations are low given the movie's release in early February.

Just like Star Wars eps. 1-3, it's disappointing to see the creators of iconic film characters reduce the characters to victims of circumstances. I still believe that Anakin Skywalker should have had most of his origin clouded in mystery and therefore left to the viewer's imagination. When viewing the original versions of episodes 4-6, does it even matter that the prequels were made? Are they even relevant or important? Make up your own version of Anakin's origin; the only difference between yours and Lucas' is that his is more "official", but not necessarily better, than your version.

The same applies to Hannibal. I think it's perfectly reasonable to criticize this movie without seeing it. I've read from at least 4 reviews now that Hannibal Rising ruins the suspension of disbelief that is necessary to enjoy characters like Hannibal Lecter. He becomes a mundane mental patient with the usual laundry list of circumstances that shape his twisted personality. Ho hum. I accept that in life heroes may not be the gods we make them out to be, and that villains may not be the pure incarnations of evil we think they are. But that's in life. Hannibal is fiction, though he was once an extraordinarily powerful fictional villain before the sequel grindhouse ruined him.

I wanted Hannibal's early life to be clouded by the kind of contending urban myths and legends that make it impossible to make a movie like this. I wanted to imagine his early life for myself without a bunch of money-grubbing movie executives and one-shot wonders like Thomas Harris making it "official" that "this is where he came from, this is what happened to him, these are the circumstances that steered him to evil." That's boring and I'm not going to pay for it or waste two hours of my life on it.

He plays half a dozen characters in every movie he appears in lately, generally none of them well. The man is unquestionably a talented comedian and comic actor, but why not let him concentrate on one role let a few other actors find work?

I guess the upside of all this is that we could eventually end up with the opportunity to give Murphy Razzies for Worst Actor, Worst Actress, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Supporting Actress and Worst Couple ...all in the same film!
