This whole ten moviesup for Best Picture thing might come back to bite them in the ass. They could up with two or three movies tying for Best Picture. Plus, there's few other movies worthy of BP besides the ones that were up for the Globes' Best Drama category.

That's actually not a bad solution. As I have previously noted, with ten films in the running the vote could be so badly split that anything could end up winning. Undeserving films have won before with only 5 in the running for the same reason. Yeah, and "12 Angry Men" is one of my all-time favorite movies, so you can imagine I wasn't happy with its placement on that list and "Titanic" being higher up.

So, in the end, with all of the hype that ultimately led Titanic to Oscar gold, there is still a major possibility that Avatar might also achieve that same goal. (sorry saturnwatcher). I thought Titanic a decent movie, but all the overbloated hype that it has gotten over the years has been preposterous. Id appreciate that it managed to bring back some of the love themes and dazzle of Hollywood's past (as well as Gloria Stuart's superb performance), but it certainly was not the best picture of the year. We had to sit through most of 3 hours watching a preposterous love story with an ending we already knew. It wasn't like you could walk into this movie, shout, "Hey everyone, the boat sinks!" and actually spoil it for a single person in the audience...unless George W. Bush happened to be there that night.

On the other hand, we did get to see Leo DiCaprio die a slow and painful death, which I suspect explains the enormous popularity of the film. Give the people what they want and they'll turn out. However, Hollywood already made a much better movie about the Titanic 40 years earlier...A Night To Remember.

The fact that it has pushed Titanic out of the number one spot is the only bright spot. However, Avatar has benefited enormously not just from average ticket prices higher than Titanic, but the fact that a huge portion of it's total box-office has come from 3D ticket sales which are almost twice as high. What I like about Avatar making as much as it did is that it helps push Titanic that much farther from everyone's memory. The only relevant way to measure movies against each other is by considering ticket sales, rather than box-office gross. It is ridiculous to say that such and such a movie made $100 million in 2009 when tickets cost 10 bucks each and suggest that in some sense it outpeformed a movie that made $40 million in 1975 when tickets cost $3. Well, for 11 months out of the year, yes, "money is more important than anything else to Hollywood." For the one other month, all that is important to H-Wood are the Oscars. Case in point: the Writer's Guild strike just HAD to end by the time the Oscars came around!

You also need to consider the fact that much more people went to the movies in those days than do today. Besides, when Gone with the Wind first premiered, it made more money (I think 30+ million) than many films earn today. I saw that it has so far made over 180 million in unadjusted gross, but I'm not sure how much of that was made after its initial release.

That's easy, because the box-office gross looks like more money, thus it helps their arguement that they MUST spend $200-$300 million to make their epic blockbusters. As for "Gone With The Wind", when you factor inflation to any movie that over 70 years old, of course THAT movie is going to look like the biggest grosser.
