If Happy Feet and Borat (however funny it is, it's hardly a film worthy of their attention) made this year's AFI Top Ten List, that should give some idea how bad a year 2006 was...

"Borat" was a little on the offensive side, but really funny at the same time. It was a social commentary on how society percieves people from other cultures (poking fun of their languages, customs, etc.), and how cultures usually put stereotypes on people who are 'inferior' than the great countries. He did go over-the-top a few places, but he pulled it off effectively and with incredible one-line punchers.

"Happy Feet" on the other hand....It was good. Not great. To me it was part animation film/part Kubrick. Although I do give it marks for being one of the first to blend CGI and live-action together.

** = Happy Feet
*** 1/2 = Borat

and "United 93". I hope it recieves an Oscar nomination for Paul Greengrass as director, and for best picture. That's all I have to say about it.

That's just my opinion.

So, two questions come to mind:

1. Can a movie nobody has seen win a truckload of awards in the next few months?

2. Is there really a movie called Babel, or is the whole thing a hoax created by film critics with nothing else to praise in 2006?

Consider--how many people have actually seen this film? Not many. Worldwide, it has accumulated about $36 million. Oh, sure, that is 4 times the box-office for A Sound of Thunder, but its awfully pathetic for a film so many critics are gushing over.

My theory is that this movie is in fact a clever put up job. They have advertised its run at a few small theaters in major markets, and for the benefit of the  handful of people who show up, they explain the whole thing is a hoax, plead for silence, and show a couple Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner cartoons just so the people who came won't leave totally hacked off.

Now that its award season, all the critics can cast votes for this film so they don't have to degrade themselves by supporting any of the other crap out there. That's my theory.

Nine times out of ten, in art as in life, there is no truth to be discovered, only an error to be exposed.--H.L. Menken

One thing I couldn't help but notice is that many of these are "controversial" movies.

Borat was controversial for portraying a Kazakhstani as a buffoon, and insulting their country...

Happy Feet was controversial for having environmental themes...

United 93 was controversial for being about 9/11 (and also fears might cause more anti-Muslim sentiment)...

Little Miss Sunshine was controversial for it's "adult situations, strong language and violence,". and for the little kids' actions at the beauty pageant.

Also Babel caused some controversy due to the director not giving his co-screenwriter credit, and making it look like he wrote it by himself.

A friend in need is a bloody nuisence
