WE'VE ALWAZE LIKED QUEEN LATIFAH, and OFTEN FOUND HER to BE FUNNY, ENDEARING and APPARENTLY a GENUINELY LIKABLE MOVIE STAR. ANYONE WHO COULD HOST the PEOPLE's CHOICE AWARDS DURING the 2008 WRITERS' STRIKE and STILL COME OFF LOOKING GOOD IS a TROOPER in OUR BOOK...

BUT WITH THIS WEEK's RELEASE of JUST WRIGHT, CRITICS DECIDEDLY DISAGREE. CALLING the FILM "A PAINT-BY-NUMBERS" ROM/COM" and OTHERWISE TRASHING IT AS YET ANOTHER ARGUMENT for a SPECIAL 2010 WORST EXCUSE for a ROMANTIC COMEDY CATEGORY, THEY'VE GIVEN THIS ONE of the LOWEST RATINGS EVER for a LATIFAH VEHICLE.

ADD in the FACT THAT the BASKETBALL TEAM the FILM FOCISES ON -- THE NEW JERSEY NETS -- IS AMONG the LEAST LOVED in ITS LEAGUE, and YOU HAVE the MAKINGS of a MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT.

OKAY, WE KNOW YOU'RE ALREADY DRIBBLING with EXCITEMENT SO, CONSIDER the GAME-STARTING WHISTLE BLOWN and HAVE AT IT...

LATIFAH: "I'm keeping my fingers crossed that, with
all those other wretched Rom/Coms comin' out this year,
ours gets over-looked come RAZZIE® Time..."

Why does Queen Latifah keep making bad movies?

Are you seriously looking for any kind of answer besides "for the money"?

And why the Nets, of all teams? Oh wait, is this supposed to be some kind of "fairy tale/underdog"  story?

Rom-Coms have already had a miserable year, and now we have two more bad ones in one week!

Argument for a Worst Excuse for a Romantic Comedy?  No, we don't need to argue anymore!

By the way, how many more rom-coms (which will almost certainly suck, of course) can we look forward to in 2010?  We haven't even gotten halfway through the year, and we have enough "excuses" to fill the category already!!

The New Jersey Nets are going to be playing in a new arena beginning next season, and if I am not mistaken, they also have a new owner. The suspicion here is that this film is essentially a season ticket drive for the team and they probably pumped some money into it. Not only is Hollywood evidently completely out of original ideas; now they are apparently in the business of making promotional videos for the highest bidder.

Oh, I think you're onto something there, saturnwatcher! Hollywood has become so shameless that it's willing to make 90 minute long ads for sports teams!

Every decade, Hollywood gets worse, and nothing is ever done to restore them to any of their former glory. And yes, I'd be happy to hear any reason besides "for the money" that Queen Latifah and other ill-reputed actors and actresses keep starring in bad movies.

I think it's hard to argue that rom-coms are getting "suckier" each year. The thing about rom=coms is that it follows a formula that was started since mankind began. Rom-coms must end with a wedding. That's just the rule. So I have to ask how can you make a genre so traditional and make it "different"? It's kinda hard, if you ask me. That's why I'm not that hard on rom-coms. They follow a tradition that has been started when comedies and tragedies appeared in Greek plays. Changing the tradition is like changing the entire genre itself!

My post above was a bit tongue-in-cheek, but just out of curiousity, I went to the New Jersey Nets website. Sure enough, this movie is being pimped and linked on their site everywhere you look. There are even merchandising tie-ins. This is possibly the most shameless case of making a full length film for the specific purpose of promoting a very specific "product" in film-making history.

As for Queen Latifah's rom-coms, I think they are generally better than your average ones. I thought her performance in Last Holiday was great and Beauty Shop was pretty good for a spin-off of a series I never liked.

Yeah, just wait a year or two, and we'll be seeing "product-promoting movies" become the new genre, maybe even replacing reboots and remakes!

But Michael Moore already did that! Except his version was called "Capitalism: A Love Story!"

I think it's because Queen Latifah is from Jersey, and she may be a real life fan of the team.

And I'm sure the owners of the Nets were more than happy to go along with the movie for much needed PR.
