I never counted Saw as a horror film. When I first saw it, I expected a horror film that would scare the $hit out of me. Well, it wasn't scary at all and it didn't feel like a horror film. It has more in common with The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, and Zodaic than horror films. Just my opinion, of course. I'm surprised a lot of people responded to this thread.

Those you mentioned are thriller.Horror and thriller isn't the same.The SAW movies are horror...they're just not berry good at it.

Please, stop it with the berry puns or I'm gonna kill myself. I say that Saw is a thriller and not a horror. It has detectives looking for a serial killer. There isn't that much blood and violence either (until the sequels). The killer has the same motive from the killer of Se7en, which is why many people compare the two films. I just don't see it as a horror movie at all.

Seems Burn isn't the only one who needs to chill,person-who-I-defend.I only do the "berry" pun because HeadRAZZBerry does it a lot. SAW is a horror-thriller because it's meant to scare and create suspense.I like the saga but I've never given them

I can still remember Episode 413 when Cartman tried to run back home to beg Liane for another Dawson's Creek Trapper Keeper Ultura Futura S2000. As he fled the hallway, VSM-471 was about to shoot Cartman with a portable missile launcher. Stan and Kyle were okay with it. Now I see BHBurn in Stan's and Kyle's position and moviewizguy in Cartman's. Alas, I'd say the best horror or horror-oid film of 2010 was easily Let Me In, but for 2011, I can't say.2008: Let the Right One In

Since you've listed your's, I'll list mine: 2008: The Ruins - Loved this movie. Let the Right One In is the runner up. 2009: Coraline - Yes, it's a horror movie and it was disturbing. Runner up is Trick R' Treat. 2010: Let Me In (easily). The Crazies is the runner up. 2011: So far, Scream 4. Insidious in second.

Stan and Kyle vs. Cartman? Not a "South Park" fan, so I don't get that.
And "Coraline" is horror? For whom, a 4 year old!? Don't get me wrong, it's a great movie, but if you got scared by that movie, that's just ... WTF?! At least say "Paranormal Activity 1". It was boring at times, but the payoff during the last 5 minutes was the stuff of horror legend. Oh and "Insideous" completely owned "Scream 4" in every way ... until "Paranormal Activity 3" comes out (not that we need a third movie, but sequels are horror movies' bread and butter because they have no original ideas left).

Coraline didn't scare me, it disturbed me and I count it as horror (with a mix of other genres). Paranormal Activity gave me nightmares for an entire month, but Coraline is the better movie.

You see why I don't respect MWG as a "critic"? To him, a children's claymation movie, without any blood, counts as horror. But Saw, which was torture porn with buckets of blood, that was just a thriller.

Yep. I'm trying hard to argue my case but it looks like it won't do any good. Saw has detectives trying to find a serial killer. Hence, it's a crime thriller. The characters locked up trying to get out just adds mystery to the whole thing. It doesn't scream horror at all. Even in the third act, you have a hostage situation with the killer having a gun, not a knife. How is that a horror film? Seriously, it's no different than your usual CSI episode. Coraline is basically like a darker version of Alice in Wonderland, and it's creepy as hell. The entire third act is like a nightmare waiting to explode. Again, it's just my opinion. I'm not saying it's a fact.
So you don't respect me as a critic because you don't agree with what genre I label certain movies? It's really not a big deal as you make it out to be. Also, there are plenty of horror films that don't have blood and plenty of non-horror films that have buckets of blood. I thought Zodiac was more horrifying than Saw but I still count that as a thriller because it was about a crime mystery. The killer in Zodiac has a knife, like a slasher, yet people don't see it as a horror film. Anyway, genres are ambiguous and each person can think a movie is a certain genre. There's never really a distinct answer and you guys shouldn't make a big deal out of it.

I'll just jump in here for a second. Mr. Armond White, I mean MWG, I can see the FIRST (and ONLY the first) Saw as a thriller. But after that, it's all downhill horror, blood and guts galore, a staple of that genre. Coraline is not horror. Hell, it's not even a thriller. It's a semi-dark fantasy movie. Yes, the third act had a few jump scares that would make a 4 year go hide under his bed, but calling it a flat out horror? Please! If Coraline counts as horror because of the last 15 or 20 minutes, than I guess Kill Bill Vol 2 is a family film because it features a mother and her daugther in the end. I'm pretty sure Michaels doesn't respect you as a critic because you have no idea what you're talking about. I know that's why I take your opinion seriously.
