Yes, the first weekend total of over $40 million was impressive...but when you look at the day-to-day numbers (MoJo LINK) you'll see that from Friday-to-Sunday, the actual gross plummeted over 50%, suggesting that word-of-mouth on PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 was not berry good...

Actually, on Friday, they added the $6 million from midnight screenings, so PA2 actually made $14 million on Friday, not $20 million.
RESPONSE from Head RAZZberry: "Actually," this is typical game-playing with grosses by a major studio, which MWG (not surprisingly) has totally fallen for -- Since midnight is traditionally the hour when the date changes, "Thursday" midnight shows do belong rolled in with Friday's numbers. And if Paramount wants to claim a Friday figure of $20 million, they (and MWG) can't then turn around and defend the Friday-to-Sunday drop-off by changing the formula by which it is calculated... |

Well, it made it's budget back, plus some extra. It will probably make more or less the same as the first movie. But again, as with all horror movies, it had a low budget, made more back, hence a "three-quel" is on the way!
Sigh! |

The Four Horsemen of the Moviepocalypse: uncalled for sequels/remakes/reboots, 3-D surcharges, untalented "celebrities", and anything with Michael Bay's name attached to it.

It's interesting what will happen next week. I wonder if PA2 can maintain it's #1 status or will it lose to Saw 3D.

Interesting? Nothing interesting about it. In fact, it can be seen from a thousand miles away. "Saw" will be #1 because:
A) It has a bigger fanbase, being around longer than "PA" has B) It's being promoted as the final movie of the series, so of course people will want to see how the whole thing will end, and... C) It's in 3-D -- surcharges anyone? So no, it's second place for "PA2" next week. RESPONSE from Head RAZZberry: When you factor in how steeply business dropped off Friday-to-Sunday on the first weekend, it becomes even more clear that PA2 can't hold as #1 against SAW 3-D for Halloween weekend. Also, as B.O. MoJo staff often point out, horror films are the most "front-loaded/quick-drop-off" genre of them all, traditionally suffering 2nd-weekend plummets in the 55%-65% range (meaning PA2 will likely wind up with about $16-$19 million next weekend -- Not nearly strong enough to topple SAW 3-D). With its added edge of those noxious 3-D glasses surcharges, SAW clearly has the advantage... |
