He's been a Worst Director nominee several times, but has never "won" a RAZZIE®...  Should the combined critical and box office failure of THE ISLAND finally let Bay the Brainless take home a spray-painted gold trophy??  DISCUSS...

In an article on the front page of today's L.A. Times (August 8, 2005) THE ISLAND was used as one of the examples of how the "action genre" has fallen out of favor with movie-goers, and fallen on hard times at the box office. Other titles cited include XXX #2 and STEALTH:

Yes! It's time to go Heaven's Gate on Michael Bay's ass and give him that Razzie! It's either him or Uwe Boll (ALONE IN THE DARK) but it would be sweeter to give the Razzie to the man with the box office dud that has helped the live-action Dreamworks production company go down the barrel.

The sad thing is, this might mean the end of Dreamworks. Which has brought us the good (American Beauty, Saving Private Ryan, House of Sand and Fog) as well as the bad (Deep Impact, Jurrasic Park 2 and 3).

David Poland said Esteban Spielbergo might have to sell his share of Dreamworks to continue to fund his own projects. Damn, I liked the fact that SKG was a middle finger to the big studios. While Miramax was kind of a third or fourth place.

Don't go getting TOO Berry Happy -- If Bay follows the usual downward trajectory of a Hollywood career on the skids, next he'll be doing TV. Scarier thought than that: He'll be doing "Reality TV!"

I don't think one movie is going to finish him off... altough it sort of worked for Joel Schumacker

ISLAND was listed earlier this week in an L.A. TIMES article about 2005's lagging box office. Giving its budget as $124 millionTHE TIMES sez its Domestic B.O. to date is a mere $34 million -- OUCH!!! ISLAND was then lumped in with STEALTH as The Summer's Biggest "Box Office Disaster."

Here's a LINK to the article:

FYI: I just checked the 2005 Box Office Rankings at B.O. MOJO (www.boxofficemojo.com) and ISLAND was ranked BELOW both THE ADVENTURES OF SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL and MISS CONGENIALITY 2: ARMED & FABULOUS (both of which are considered among The Duds of '05  ).

Guess that makes THE ISLAND Michel Bay's First CERTIFIED Box Office Bomb!

When something bombs as BIG as this, you kinda wonder...maybe it shoulda been the most expensive direct-to-video title ever, instead of being a theatrical release??

I heard somewhere that movies that are released theatrically (even in limited release) make more than straight to video. Think about it, if you see a movie on the shelf that you didn't remember hearing about at the theater, would you rent it?

Here are some sobering figures (from Box Office MoJo) regarding THE ISLAND: It's Production Cost is estimated at ABOUT $125 MILLION, its Marketing Costs (TV, Radio, Print, Billboards, etc.) can reasonably be assumed to be ABOUT $50 MILLION...and its Total Domestic Box Office will wind up UNDER $37 MILLION  Anyone who can do the math can see why Hollywood Big-Wigs are crying into their Lattes this summer!   Despite earning about three times as much overseas as it has here, THE ISLAND will likely Not Even Earn Back Its Investment for SEVERAL YEARS  While it's not exactly CLEOPATRA (which in today's dollars would have cost about $450 MILLION) that's still A Whole Lotta Popcorn Down the Crapper!

I saw this one a couple of weeks ago, and so far it along with ALONE IN THE DARK, STEALTH and SON OF THE MASK are my top choices for Worst Picture this year. Here's hoping that this load of cinematic crap gets the following nominations:

Worst Picture

Worst Actor - Ewan McGregor

Worst Actress - Scarlett Johansson

Worst Supporting Actor - Sean Bean

Worst Screen Couple - Ewan McGregor & EITHER Scarlett Johnsson OR Himself Cloned

Worst Screenplay

Worst Director - Michael Bay

Worst Remake or Sequel - (Remake of THE CLONUS HORROR)

Hey, HeadRAZZBerry, please tell me you're gonna list this one on the nominating ballot in January! (I'm a voter, myself.)

I agree, THE ISLAND was one of 2005's biggest box office duds and critics clobbered it as well. (Well, not "clobbered", but it did only score a paltry 40% on Rotten Tomatoes.)

I, BooBerry, would like to officially begin my Razzie campaign for THE ISLAND!

By the way, that's a good one. "OR Himself Cloned" , I should've thought of that when I posted THE ISLAND as a suggestion in another thread.

I saw where Box Office MoJo sez that ISLAND has made about 78% of its worldwide gross "overseas." Granted, three times $36 million still doesn't reach break-even on this bloated-budget-bust, but...don't movie-goers in other countries know a dog when they smell one?!?!
