Here’s Lookin’ at You...CRUD!

I saw the Sundance Channel On Demand has a sub catagory just for Asian horror films. As I flipped through the titles, all I could of was "in a year or two, all of these are going be to made into crappy American remakes".

Here's what you do, Hollywood, you buy the rights to the movies and you English dub them! It's a helluva lot cheaper and the movie is not dragged through the mud.

It has Aja directing, so I guess that means along with being woefully derivative, the film will use violence and gore in lieu of suspense and atmosphere.

Then I guess Uwe Boll is an effing genius -- because he's a director, and he said so. . . .

 

As much as I love taking cheap shots at Boll, I know he has nothing to do with this. But it is a rip-off no matter if it's a 100% remake or just borrowing elements from another movie. America just can't make a good horror movie any more, no matter if it's "original" or a remake. The last good horror movie I saw was "The Descent", but that was a British movie. Then American studios tried to copy it with "The Cave", and that movie sucked big time.

I haven't completely given up American horror films, but the only ones in the last decade that I've enjoyed have not been big releases. I haven't done as much hunting for the rare gems as I used to in recent years, but I remember coming across movies like this one. It's not something a lot of people have seen (I don't even know if it got a theatrical run or not), but it's easily one of the best American horror films in the last five years.

However, in looking for a decent horror flick in the that low-budget market, one will likely end up slogging a lot of really awful films. It's too bad that formula so frequently accompanies the bigger budget projects. Horror movies have suffered probably more than any other genre when it comes to that kind of shameless recycling.

The most recent horror film I thought was scary was http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1038988/. Although I like almost every film I see, trust me when I say this: This has got to be one of the best and scariest horror films ever made! Don't worry. This movie is from Spain. It's getting to be known by more people because an American remake is coming out this year (mostly shot-for-shot with some newly added scenes, including an alt. ending) called "Quarantine." (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1082868/) Rec isn't out on DVD yet but there are sites and torrents out there to see it. I think it's going to come out on DVD when Quarantine comes out.

Another horror movie people seem to like is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465203/. Again, people thought "The Strangers" was a remake of this movie but The Strangers was written in 2004 so it couldn't be. Anyway, I didn't like the film as much but a lot of other people did. It's also a French movie.

Also, on other boards, I mentioned "The Mist." I loved that film to death. Anyway, these are a few great horror films you can watch, if you're not too impressed with horror movies these days.

I used to be a huge horror movie fan, willing to forgive even the mediocre efforts. As I've gotten older and mellowed, however, I've become less forgiving.

The last good american horror movie I can remember was the first Nightmare on Elm Street. Maybe it's just a dearth of talent in the director's pool, Shyamalan's "looks like a horror movie but isn't" eviscerating the genre, and Roger Carpenter's fall from grace dating back to Ghosts of Mars. 

I don't count the bulk of the teenie slasher films, excluding NoES and  Halloween, as being worthy of consideration.

Perhaps it's because as we americans are living in a real world horror show that is our current administration, Hollywood (mistakenly) perceives that we've lost our taste for a good horror flick . . . .
