Yep...First of all, the fact that something is "popular" at a moment in time is a rather poor measure of quality. Pet Rocks were all the rage for a few months back in the 70's, until the public wised up to the fact that spending money for something you can walk outside and pick up off the ground is pretty retarded. Second, the MTV Awards are typically chosen by a specific demographic. It is a also a demographic that doesn't have a lot life experience. There were a lot of things I liked when I was 18 that I came to realize were crap. As for the Oscars, they make a lot of mistakes, but the biggest argument I have with them is that I think their voting system is fundamentally flawed, and there are probably too many voters.

They way I see it is. The MTV Movie awards or the People's Choice or any public voted awards (somewhat including these awards except for the smaller numbers and membership aspect) are all fundamentally based on popularity. They are not stating or pretending to be about anything else.
Hence why saturnwatcher and I couldn't care less about them.

Perhaps the Academy should offer a few thousand of its voters to the Golden Globes, so that both award shows will have a more balanced measure of credibility to them.

The Four Horsemen of the Moviepocalypse: uncalled for sequels/remakes/reboots, 3-D surcharges, untalented "celebrities", and anything with Michael Bay's name attached to it.

Why? I mean, yes, she is the most nominated actor ever, but she's only won twice.

I think the sheer number of nods she has gotten is enough to rename the award. It's like all she has to do is appear in a movie and she automatically get a nod. It's like the voters are thinking "Oops, empty spot in the Best Actress category ... ah, just give it to Streep!".

awesome list.  thanks for the comprehensive list and information. I really like watching all the awards winners and nominees and occasionally find a few amazing gems mixed in that no one really is talking about.

Just out of curiousity, does anyone know at what time today the winner(s) of the Palme d'Or will be revealed.

Yep, she's quickly stepping her game up since being in the turd that was "Spider-Man 3".

Vits, Indeed, so my reaction was the same when I first heard this. I assume that they wanted to honour director Terrence Mallick who seems to be back at the top of his game.

This will also be one of the first two limited release films this year that will be given a wide release later this year (the other being Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris)

Burn, I am also glad that the remarks of Von Trier didn't effect her chances of winning this award.

Just out curiousity....Here's a list of all films submitted for the Foreign Langauge Film-category at the oscars so  far... link

I was wondering if anyone had seen any of these films and, if so, what did you think of that film?

I personally rented Sonny Boy (Netherlands) and will be seeing Tropa de Elite 2 (Brazil) with some friends at my local arthouse-cinema* later this week... My local arthouse-cinema is also currently showing Declaration of War (France), Pina 3D (Germany) and A Separation (Iran).... My assumption is that my local video rentalshop will also be renting Bullhead (Belguim) in the near future... But of that I am not sure...

*= Do Americans have Arthouse-cinemas, as in, a cinema showing film festival and foreign films in every reasonably sized town? Or is that more a European privilege?

Of course,I saw VIOLETA.I gave it 7/10,but I think it was a good choice. It's a movie foreigners can enjoy as well. It's the bio of one of the best chilean singers.I would've been fine between this movie, and "03:34"(same grade),which basically was BABEL and CRASH with our 2010 earthquake as the background. But I think the former was chosen for being closer to an Oscar baiter, and also for being the highest grossing chilean movie of all times.Something funny:A friend of my grandma said she didn't want to see it because it despicts poverty. My grandma said "She's a moron".I said "Did you tell her that?"."No,she's my friend"."Why?"."I don't know".

I also saw THE SILENT HOUSE from URUGUAY.It's famous for being the first horror movie to be shot in one 80-90 minute long uncut take. Some people think it was a trick, because it was shot with a photo camera, and they all have time limits, but I don't care.I gave it 3/10.Have you ever played one of those video-games where you're in a haunted house at night and you just walk around and find stuff that seem meaningless but later they're useful? This movie is like that.A girl walks around a house at night and every couple of minutes and when she founds something,it's actually meaningless, and there are lame jump scares, and the twist ending is so basic. And Hollywood's remaking it.Dead
