I try to ignore an actor or director's personal life when watching a movie. The only time I don't ignore it is if the work is a metaphor (i.e. Stephen King and The Shining) or, more often, if it tries to pass them off as "okay" (i.e. Victor Salva and Powder).
I think that Mel can bounce back. His previous film Edge Of Darkness wasn't a bad movie.
