Next Summer It’s Go Speed Racer Go !

Warner Bros. is the latest studio to jockey for boffo summer 2008 BO.

Speed Racer is starting its engines two weeks earlier than planned. Daily Variety reports Warner Bros. has moved the film's opening date to May 9, 2008; domestic distribution boss Dan Fellman says the move is intended to give Speed Racer maximum playability throughout the rest of the season. 

It might also be to move the film's opening date out of competition with the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones saga, which opens on May 22, 2008. Now Speed Racer will be up against the opening of Iron Man from Universal Pictures, and will face the second Narnia film when it opens a week later. Warners also plans to open the movie internationally on the same day, which gives it a better position against the scheduled European soccer championships. 
Based on the 1970's animated action series, Speed Racer is written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, and produced by Joel Silver; it's the Matrix team reunited.
