YOU'D HAVE to GO ALL the WAY BACK to WARREN BEATTY's VISUALLY STUNNING (BUT DRAMATICALLY STUNTED) 1990 VERSION of
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099422 - to FIND SUCH a BIG BUDGET MOVIE BASED on as LONG FORGOTTEN a CHARACTER as the $250 MILLION 2013 REMAKE of http://www.razzies.com/forum/forum681.html -

YES, IT DOES HAVE the OBVIOUS ADVANTAGE of JOHNNY DEPP STARRING as TONTO...BUT with HIS DEAD-CROW-on-the-HEAD COSTUME, DRIED-BIRD-POOP-on-his-FACE MAKEUP and STILTED LINE DELIVERIES, DEPP MAY FINALLY HAVE GONE "TOO FAR OUT" for MAINSTREAM AUDIENCES (SEE IMAGE BELOW)

PLAGUED by PRODUCTION DELAYS, RE-SHOOTS and MASSIVE BUDGET OVER-RUNS (IT WAS ORIGINALLY APPROVED for PRODUCTION at SUBSTANTIALLY LESS THAN $200 MILLION) THIS LONE RANGER (A BLOATED-BUDGET REMAKE of a 1981 MULTIPLE RAZZIE® "WINNER" -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082648/awards - ) HAD ALL the EARMARKS of BEING a GIGANTIC B.O. DUD.

AND EVEN IF IT WEREN'T a B.O. BOMB, IT STILL LOOKS ALARMINGLY LIKE an UNINTENTIONAL REMAKE of ANOTHER PREVIOUS RAZZIE® TARGET -- OUR 1999 WORST PICTURE "WINNER" http://www.razzies.com/forum/1999-razzie-nominees-and-winners_topic5534.html - .

You couldn't wait, could you? Now you have snubbed White House Down.

RESPONSE from Head RAZZberry: No, Oiram -- WHITE HOUSE DOWN opens this Friday (July 28) and RANGER opens next Wednesday (July 3rd). They are thus not in direct competition to be named Worst of the Weak

I posted the RANGER discussion now because I'll be out of town next week, and wanted it to have a head start before it shows up on our Main Page on the 3rd. If the reviews on DOWN are "down and dirty" enough, I may take the time to post an Official Forum on it. If not, I plan to post our Mid-Year Poll as this Friday's Main Page item. If you still feel strongly that DOWN should have a Forum, feel free to set up a Member-Started one ( http://www.razzies.com/forum/memberstarted-forums-on-2013-titles_forum663.html -

I actually kind of liked Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy. True, story-wise it wasn't very good, but Beatty's eye for style made up for the story's shortcomings, in my opinion.

RESPONSE from Head RAZZberry: I've alwaze said that Beatty's DICK TRACY was a great movie for the deaf -- It was visually dazzling, but the screenplay (and several of the actors playing various villains*) were so over-the-top it was impossible for me to consider it anything more than a "nice try."

* Specifically, I found Al Pacino's spittle-spraying portrayal of "Big Boy Caprice" almost indefensibly excessive...

I know I've said this before, but I will say it again: Nobody my age knows what the hell Lone Ranger is! I know I wasn't even born yet when the show was on, but I'm not alone here. My movie-going friends also have no idea what to make of this movie. The lack of promotion for Lone Ranger isn't helping either -- The film opens in 8 days and I think I've only see 1 or 2 commercials for it (and a the Subway tie-in campaign).

I am wondering if this film might be D.O.A, but they do have Johnny Depp's star power at play. Then again, Dark Shadows was a Box Office Bomb, also starring Depp. Either way, Lone Ranger will probably be a bomb because, well... NOBODY TODAY KNOWS WHAT IT IS!

Let's be fair. This movie is directed, written and produced by the same people who made PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. Back in 2003, did anyone think a movie about pirates would be good? Specially one aimed towards children? But it turned out to be good, so maybe the same can happen with this western. I know that it was based on a Disney Land ride, but it's not like it was a popular source material.

Aside from the 2 stars, the cast includes William "The New SHREDDER" Fichtner (who was also in PHANTOM) and Razzie winner Barry Pepper (who was also in BROKEN CITY and SNITCH).

Oh, and I didn't like DICK TRACY either.

Don't forget, Lone Ranger also co-stars Oscar nominated Tom Wilkinson and two-time Oscar nominated Helena Bonham Carter...

RESPONSE from Head RAZZberry: Wilkinson has actually been Oscar-nominated twice as well ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0929489/awards - ® prospects. Bad movies can co-star "good actors" and still be bad movies...

Maybe Wilkinson and H.B.C. will give bad performances, which would be shocking since they're both good actors. But that shock might turn into a desire to nominate them. I mentioned the other 2 actors because they may have a better chance at Razzie nominations for being in other movies.

I do have to admit the first Pirates of the Caribbean was a good film. I wouldn't say it was aimed particularly at children, but anyone of any age could enjoy it. Of course, the franchise has suffered sequel-itis, and the recent films have been real stinkers. In fact, I am kind of shocked the 4th Pirates film didn't even get one Razzie nod.

But Lone Ranger is different. At least people knew the Pirates ride the film was based on. The studio execs over at Disney are remaking an old TV show into a movie (again). Need I mention the fact that few people in this day and age even remember the show? Besides that, we've seen this before -- Anyone remember "Land of The Lost"? Another  movie based on a TV Show not many people watched or remembered. There's also Speed Racer, Wild Wild West, Dudley Do Right and ... could go on and on.

As much as I like Johnny Depp, I am afraid "Lone Ranger" will be a Box office Bomb, get critically panned, and just might be "One of ours."

Some of you have talked about this movie not having been well marketed. Will http://variety.com/2013/film/news/consumers-to-play-cowboys-and-indians-with-lone-ranger-1200503110 -

RESPONSE from Head RAZZberry: Most of those tie-in products they're talking about will likely end up at 99-Cents Only stores. And the fact that their only "fast food" tie-in is with Subway (which hardly appeals to the key movie-going demographic) speaks to how hard a time Dizz-Knee has had finding anyone to partner with them in promoting LONE RANGER. The film's only hope is that Depp's performance is as outrageous as his appearance playing Tonto -- and even that might not save it...

I'd like to point out two problems that have been going on in Hollywood for awhile. Firstly, studio executives in general have real issue with saying the word "no." For some reason, no one said no to "Jack and Jill," "Norbit," "Bucky Larson, Born to be a Star," "Catwoman" and many other horrible films.

Secondly, when film studios do make mistakes, they have a huge problem admitting it. Every time award season comes around, everyone in Hollywood loves to pretend every film made is a breathtaking masterpiece. We are human beings, we make mistakes everyday. How come so many actors, directors, writers and producers can't admit they, too, have "bad days at the office"? We have all been there!

That's the magic of pitching ideas: Anything can sound like it'll be a good movie. CATWOMAN is a well-known character; almost every Adam Sandler movie has grossed at least $100 million; not every Eddie Murphy movie has been a hit but one of his biggest hits were the ones where he played several characters and/or fat people.

Unless the movie is both a critical and financial flop, they don't believe the movie is bad -- and maybe not even then. By instinct, they always come up with an excuse as to why people didn't like it. You mentioned BUCKY LARSON. Nick Swardson said that the critics were prepared to give the movie negative reviews because he thinks they're bias against raunchy comedies (even though it was released the same year as the Oscar-nominated BRIDESMAIDS). Kenn Viselman said that he had always planned for THE OOGILOVES to be a hit on DVD. And of course there are several movies where they openly mock critics, like LADY IN THE WATER, ALL THAT JAZZ and some of Woody Allen's movies.

Nick Swardson is a huge idiot for defending a movie that made $2 Million on a $10 Million budget. He acted like a huge man/child (pretty much like any character he's played in any Adam Sandler movie).

I've just seen the Lindsay Lohan film "I Know Who Killed Me" and I have no idea how this piece of garbage got green lighted. Same with Catwoman. Yes, she is a well known character and I am a huge fan of the real character in the Batman Universe. However, they created a completely different character with little to no coherent backstory. I am shocked after reading the script, that none of the actors, the producers or the director said "this is freaking ridiculous!"

Anyway, should I do a written review or video review for "I Know Who Killed Me"?

Just like Ed Wood defending the flaws in PLAN 9 saying "you have to suspend your disbelief", they can excuse anything. It won't always be a good excuse, though.

I'm sure that, after DAREDEVIL dissapointed, the execs wanted to go with a super-hero already seen on screen to secure tickets. And the title of I KNOW WHO KILLED ME did sound intriguing.

UPDATE from Head RAZZberry: One of the front page items in the L.A. Times on this film's opening day was an extensive (and not exactly flattering) article discussing the "gamble" and "risk" Dizz-Knee took in making the film. A fascinating look behind-the-scenes at the studio that gave us JOHN CARTER (and lived to regret it) the article is a must-read for anyone hoping to understand how modern Hollywood works (or doesn't!)...

Okay, I saw Lone Ranger at the Northgate theater in Hixson Tennessee. I am not here to give a review, but what I will tell you is this: The theater had nearly all of their workers dressed in Lone Ranger hats, badges, and masks. They even had a guy dressed as the movie's Tonto shake hands with people near the start of the movie.

The screening I was at was PACKED, and almost the whole crowd seemed to enjoy it. I do not know what you guys will make of this.

I'm thinking it should either be a Worst Supporting Actor (for Johnny Depp) or Worst Remake or Rip-Off finalist. It's down to a 4 out of 20 approval rating, which is a D minus.

To oiram: I could understand that happening in a state like Tennessee. The North probably would be just as unenthusiastic as most of the pro critics.

To moviecritic1994: Speaking of which, there was a list of eligible contenders for 2005, the first year in which this forum existed. 40 - 50 films were highlit as likely contenders, and The Honeymooners [remake] was one of them. And because it starred Cedric the Entertainer, it beat The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl to the position of Worst New Movie of the Weak of June 10, 2005. It was later named to the Bottom 40 Films of 2005 at #33.

Wouldn't the fact that Depp got top billing, mean that he would be listed as Worst Actor, not Worst Supporting Actor?

RESPONSE from Head RAZZberry: Depp's billing, and his total screen time, would both suggest that he should indeed be a Worst Actor contender, rather than being listed in the Supporting Actor category. One of the most frequent complaints in reviews has been that Depp's character of Tonto, essentially a secondary/supporting character in every previous version of RANGER, has been inexplicably elevated to main character status...

Somehow I missed the memo that said Tonto had supplanted The Lone Ranger this time. I haven't done enough research to complete my ballot~race standings, but I'll do it today, with The Lone Ranger as one of my 5 personal front-runners for either Worst Actor or Worst Remake or Rip-off.

To JoeBacon: But I have to admit The Lone Ranger was over twice as bad as John Carter. I still don't know how John Carter managed to scrape a 10/20 from critics!

To Vits: Johnny Depp appeared in two of my Bottom 40 Films of 2011. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (#39) and Jack and Jill (#1). But until December of 2010, he'd starred in nearly all good films. He's starred in 11 of my past annual Top 40 Films, and 8 of my Retro Top 40 Movies lists for the 1980s and 90s. I hope Johnny Depp hasn't lost his touch in the new decade, and am cautiously optimistic that 2014's Into the Woods will succeed with critics.

Here are a few Critic's quotes I found on Rotten Tomatoes, maybe they can be used in 34th Razzie Ceremony??

"No wonder Depp's in disguise. No wonder Hammer wears a mask. Wouldn't you"?- Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger

"Overblown, stupid, loud, unfunny, and completely maddening in its undisguised assumption that you'll swallow this nonsense whole".-Mike McGranaghan, Aisle Seat.

"Disney spent over $200 million to prove The Lone Ranger is too old-fashioned for such a newfangled, smart-aleck world".-Mark Keizer, Box office Magazine

"It's like Dumb & Dumber out on the range, but without the laughs". Erin Free, FILM INK

UPDATE from Head RAZZberry: This morning's edition of the trade paper Hollywood Reporter features an article in which "industry analysts" predict that, based on the "dismal" initial B.O. numbers, Dizz-Knee's losses on LONE RANGER could end up in JOHN CARTER TERRITORY -- Approaching (and/or possibly surpassing) $150 million. The article also points out that, in addition to the film's $250 million production budget, the studio laid out about $175 million(!) more to market RANGER.

FURTHER UPDATE from Head RAZZBERRY: Quoting from this morning's Los Angeles Times coverage of the 4th of July weekend box office results: "The western starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammermustered up an embarrassing $48.9 million. Such a weak opening puts THE LOAN RANGER on a pace to become one of the biggest big-budget bombs at the summer box office. Though the season's WHITE HOUSE DOWN and AFTER EARTH have also proven to be disappointments, each film cost around $100 million less to produce than this weekend's flop. Walt Disney Studios had to halt production on RANGER in 2011 when the movie's budget soared to $250 million; the studio says it eventually reduced the cost to $225 million."

Worst Screenplay (Justin Haythe, Ted Elliot & Terry Rossio): The script paved the way for a movie with a way too long running-time (2 1/2 hours). For a movie that is supposed to be an "action adventure." that running time is too long. Some parts of the movie could even bore a person with a long attention span!

Worst Director: Gore Verbinski: He did a lazy job in putting this movie together. Little, if anything, was done to prevent the movie from having an inconsistent pace. Just like in Baz Luhrmann's version of The Great Gatsby the actors are taken for granted. This director just put the actors in front of the camera, thinking everything else would just "fall into place."

Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff or Sequel: This has been explained by the previous categories in which it deserves nominations.

Directed by Michael Bay and M. Night Shyamalan comes...a movie guaranteed to win Razzies!

Before Grown Ups 2 came out, I really was thinking Lone Ranger was going to be a shoo- in for Worst Picture. But after looking at the reviews for both films... maybe this movie might just get a few more nominations than just one or two.

Here are my Razzie predicted nominations for LONE RANGER:

Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel
Worst Screen Couple
Worst Director

Worst Remake, Rip-off, or Sequel of THE LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER from 1981...which I think is a much superior film...Ouch

Worst Actor for Depp...

Worst Screen Couple for Depp and anyone sharing the screen with him...

Definitely worst screenplay...worst director...worst (you name it...it deserves it)...

Leopoldo Muñoz (4/7): "Verbinski doesn't just recreate the past; he portrays the current state of the U.S. as someone who acts like the sheriff of the world. In that sense, the hero is an outcast against the idea of wellfare proposed by the market".

No, I meant that he seems to be looking too deeply at the movie. I'm pretty sure that Gore Verbinski didn't have welfare or the War on Terror in mind when he made The Lone Ranger. I made the Armond comparison because he does that a lot too. Remember, he thinks that Toy Story 3 is about http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2010/06/armond-white-writes-first-bad-review-toy-story-3 - glorifying consumerism.

I went to the movies and saw it. I wasn't planning to, but my dad really wanted to out of nostalgia. I explained to him that the movie was very different from the old show, but he wanted to take a chance.

For your consideration:
-Worst Actor for Johnny Depp.
-Worst Screenplay.
-Worst Remake or Sequel.

My dad wants it to be nominated for Worst Picture, but I don't. And I really don't want it nominated for Worst Couple (Depp & Armie Hammer).

Hmm... I thought that Armie Hammer did a much worse job than Johnny Depp. Did you choose Depp because of the Indian thing, Vits?

Also, Vits, I said in my review that the biggest problem is that they don't have the tone of the movie set well. Sometimes it is too dark for the children, and then sometimes it gets too silly for the adults. Do you agree with my assessment?

Yes. And I thought it was admirable, considering that there's never a reason to believe that the characters become friends.

I thought it was bad, but not among the worst of the year. One of the reasons is that, while the 150-minute running time was noticeable, I was never actually bored. Meanwhile, A HAUNTED HOUSE (my current contender) was 80 minutes long and it felt twice longer.

In your review, you talked about how he wasn't the epic hero he was meant to be. I agree, but I felt that was the script writers' fault because they spent too much time writing him as a clueless guy. No actor could've made him feel like a real hero, but Hammer at least made him sympathetic and relatable.

No. I wanted to keep an open mind about that. Depp is great at playing goofy characters, but this time, he was goofing around in front of the camera. That's not the same thing. It felt like he wasn't taking the role or the movie seriously. On the other hand, my dad felt disrespectful to tackle on an important issue (the conflict between whites and Native-Americans) with farcical gags and no insight.

Oh, absolutely. In your review, you mentioned the scene where BUTCH eats DAN's heart. I was worried because there was a kid (10-12) sitting in front of me.

For the first half-hour I was watching The Lone Ranger, I was reminded heavily of Jonah Hex. The style and tone of the films are virtually the same. I stopped being reminded of Jonah Hex for the remaining two hours. The reason for this is because Jonah Hex is way, way, way, way better than The Lone Ranger!

To the film's credit, the last action scene involving the trains is actually awesome. Of course, it's the only scene in the film that feels like something that would happen in the previous Lone Ranger series. William Fitchner is decent as Butch Cavendish, the cannibalistic villain. These two parts are the only good parts in the film. The rest of the film is as bad as The Last Airbender.

In a better Lone Ranger movie, the main plot would be about the Ranger and Tonto tracking down Cavendish and enacting revenge. But, for whatever reason, the main villain in the film isn't Cavendash, it's Latham Cole, an old railroad baron played blandly by Tom Wilkinson. Hilariously, him being evil is supposed to be a twist, but it's obvious that he's evil. Another irritating thing about the film is Barry Pepper's character Fuller. He's tricked into thinking that the Comanche broke their treaty and he leads a slaughter of them because of it. When he learns he's been tricked, instead of turning against Cole, he joins him. What could have been an interesting, 3-dimentional villain is turned into a generic jerkass who tries to shoot kids. The Comanche act stupid in this too. They learn that the Comanche raids are false-flags and that the army is being mislead. Instead of using this information to prevent a war, they ignore it and fight the army anyway.

Armie Hammer is incredibly boring as The Lone Ranger. They should have cast a more charasmatic actor like Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who's great in Don Jon BTW) as the Ranger. His "romance" with his brother's widow is creepy as Hell. He's also very dumb too. There's being a pacifist and then there's being a God damn idiot like he is. Tonto has Cavendish at gunpoint and he knocks him out so he can take Cavendish in custody. He knows that Cavendish has an ally on the inside, but takes him in anyway. It seems like the only reason for his pacifism is so the film can rip-off The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. That's another problem with the film: it steals blatantly from other Westerns*. Cavendish being pulled by a horse in the desert is stolen from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, the rangers waiting at the train-station is stolen from Once Upon A Time In The West, the Church people on the train singing Shall We Gather At The River? is stolen from The Wild Bunch, the pocket-watch symbolism is stolen from For A Few Dollars More, but the worst thievery is the "Comanche raid." It's blatantly stolen from The Searchers. It's so horribly blatant that John Wayne, John Ford, Natalie Wood, Ward Bond, and Jeffrey Hunter are now spinning in their graves. Vera Mills is spinning in her rocking chair. The film also has similarities with The Birth Of A Nation, but that appears to be unintentional. Gore Verbinski's direction, apart from the train sequence, is awful. The only scenes that aren't technically awful are the ones that are stolen from other Westerns. The script is awful as well. The three biggest problems with the film are: Johnny Depp as Tonto, the length, and misplaced grittiness. Depp's performance is basically Buster Keaton in red-face, except horribly unfunny. The running gag with him feeding the dead bird on his head is both unfunny and racist. The film doesn't have enough plot to justify being two and half hours long. As bad as Jonah Hex was, that was only 90 minutes. The film's dark tone is horribly offputting. There's several needlessly gruesome scenes in the film like Butch eating the Ranger's brother's heart and the Comanche slaughter. This wouldn't bother me, but the film seemed to be marketed towards families. Also, what the Hell was up with that rabbit at the end?

Here's my plan for a decent Lone Ranger movie: Jospeph Gordon-Levitt plays the Ranger, an unknown Native American actor (with no bird on his head) plays Tonto, and they search after a non-cannibalistic Butch Cavendish (still played by Fitchner). It's, also, only 90 minutes long. Grade: F

Next-up: Interview With The Vampire!!

*And non-Westerns too; the bit about the ladder in the end action scene is lifted from The General.

The scenes from other Westerns didn't feel like homages to me; they felt like lazy rip-offs. Even with that in mind, the "homage" to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is blatant thievery.

Mad Movies, french magazine of excellent repute that covers fantasy, horror and science-fiction cinema, lists The Lone Ranger as 6th in their top 10 best movies of 2013. They can hardly be seen as Depp or Disney fanboys, on the contrary. I do agree with them on that. The only reason it should have its place in the Razzies would be because of how many people disliked it. Surely not for its lack of qualities.

What Hammer said about how critics bashed the movie not for what's in it but for how it was made... If you believe that makes him an idiot, I challenge you to go to Rotten Tomatoes and read all the critics and find me one where the movie is bashed on purely for its lack of cinematic qualities, such as the directing, the filming, the cinematography, the choreography of action scenes, the plot,... I won't hold my breath, though -- cause I failed to find any.

It's not uncommon for critics to mention the history of how the movie got made. But it's not to be mean or to show that they've been ready to give it a bad review. They simply state facts. That's also why they describe the premise of the movie and mention which character is played by which actor (even though anyone can read those things anywhere else). Most of the reviews for ENOUGH SAID mentioned Gandolfini's death.

Still don't see much actual movie critic in those other than a general "I found the story silly." Which falls a bit short for a critic.
