Topic: 99 Buckets of Gore on the Floor, 99... Posted: June 05 2007 at 7:50am
TAKING the FIRST HOSTEL 's GORE QUOTIENT to a NEW LEVEL, HOSTEL II PROMISES to HAVE TEENS DOING TECHNICOLOR YAWNS from COAST-to-COAST. THOSE of US WHO KNOW BETTER THAN to INTRODUCE SUCH IMAGES INTO OUR HEADS CAN ONLY WONDER: EXACTLY WHAT IS THE APPEAL of SUCH INHUMAN GARBAGE?!?

It's sad that horror films are more like torture porn these days. I haven't seen the first HOSTEL movie, but I think they need to stop.
Well, there was one highlight: The Descent seems like the only normal horror film of late.

I think all of these recent torture movie are vile pieces of garbage. For some reason, some people get a kick out of seeing people being gored to death. I will never understand that.
In fact, I don't understand what the whole horror genre has come to be lately. They are either lame Japanese remakes or extreme gore-fests. A good horror movie needs balance, like the first Halloween. Today's "horror movies" are anything but balanced.

I have a long-held theory about the dumbing down of modern horror movies, which traces their long-lasting fall to the original JAWS . While JAWS was a brilliantly conceived and executed horror film, it was also one of the first to operate largely on a visceral level -- Terrifying audiences at a gut level with almost no intellectual quotient. My theory centers on the desensitization (is that a word?) of the movie-going public that has been on-going in the three decades since JAWS was originally released: Younger audiences, through years of exposure to violence on TV, in the movies (and especially in graphic video games) have gotten to the point where one of the few things they react to is gore. And to get a reaction from them at all, the graphic gore quotient has to be upped, like a poker ante, with every new film. Thus we now have "entertainment" like the HOSTEL , SAW and recent TEXAS CHAINSAW remakes/rip-offs. Their supposed "attraction" is seeing how much more realistic (and, to many of us not "into" this kind of "entertainment," disgustingly graphic) each film can be than the one before it. At this rate, actual snuff films should come back into vogue some time in the next 2-3 years...

I guess we should have never judged this movie by its cover: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/hostel_2/
It looks like it's one of your smarter horror movies...now I wanna watch it (I really don't wanna watch the first)!

Regardless, they finally seem to be realizing they JUST MIGHT be oversaturating the market with horror films. At least Bob Weinstein might have, as he quoted as much in today's Sunday paper in regards to the avalanche viewers are getting lately, and that the genre will probably need new boundaries to find soon.

Since moviewizguy posted the above, the tomatometer rating has gone way down, but I am still surprised at the number of critics that actually gave this a positive review.
While we are on the subject of these torture porn films, Saw 4 is coming out. It is already in post-production and is set to be released in October, just like last years Saw 3 . Will this series ever end?
Response from Head RAZZberry: Here's a LINK to check out the current RT numbers on HOSTILE: PART II. It is shocking that about half the critics reviewing it found it even acceptable, let alone praise-worthy...

I feel Jason Boggs is grossly mischaracterizing the attack at Pearl Harbor by calling it a terrorist attack. It was a declaration of war by not just one country, but three, already at war with the rest of the world. This declaration just happened to be delivered by a sucker punch, in the form of torpedo bombers, bombers and fighters.
That said, after reading the rest of his article, I agree that Arch Oboler is radio's equivalent to torture porn. It would be interesting if it turned out Eli Roth was familiar with Oboler's broadcast. I wouldn't be surprised if there were books going way back that tell similar stories.
I don't feel any of this justifies a museum exhibit that characterizes torture porn movies as "a resurgence in production, popularity, and inventiveness unparalleled since the rise of the indie horror movement in the 1970s." It's like using cussing, grossness, or sex to cover up what isn't there. It's just graphic violence taken to a new level.

I only have two of Oboler's radio plays...and both are Christmas related... The main reason for this was the fact that the others creeped me out so much that I took them off the computer...and it takes a LOT for me to do that...

I found the first Saw and Hostel movies to be decently entertaining. For Hostel in particular, the violence was sometimes over the top, but overall they were unique in their own way. For the violence, I refuse to watch any of the sequels...

I just saw it.
They know how to write a sequel. They know about the rules and how to show things that will please both fans and newcomers. It may seem like the first movie all over again.Although they use the same formula for the premise, they change important aspects of the plot.Like showing the villains's perspective.
This time they get to the point more quickly. That's good for torture porn fans.Specially since this time they're more creative about those scenes(they're not over the top fun like the SAW movies, though). And the characters aren't one-dimensional,something you'd expect.I specially liked all the layers surrounding STUART & TODD .
What ruins it all it's the ending.Instead of analyzing deeply what it truly means that BETH can't call the police, they once again end it in revenge ,but this time is just silly. And it makes you feel like the whole movie was just pointless and more of the same.
I give this 4/10.It's the same rating I gave the first one,but I find this one to be better. They both were about to get a 3 and 5,but certain things in the last half or 1/3 made me change my mind.
