ALTHOUGH SOME of OUR FORUM MEMBERS* HAVE DEFENDED THIS as BEING QUIRKY and ORIGINAL, the ONE/TWO PUNCH of TERRIBLE REVIEWS and TINY BOX OFFICE ALL BUT DEMAND THAT WE INCLUDE THE SPIRIT as OUR FINAL FORUM of 2008... HANDING the DIRECTING REINS OVER to the WRITER of 300 (WHICH WAS ACTUALLY HAD MORE LAUGHS THAN MEET THE SPARTANS) THIS FINAL LIONSGATE RELEASE of 2008 PROVED to BE the LAST BIG DUD of the YEAR -- WITH BOTH BAD B.O. and ROTTEN REVIEWS at ROTTEN TOMATOES. ALTHOUGH IT FLOPPED TOO LATE to MAKE OUR NOMINATING BALLOT, WE THOUGHT ITS UNDER ACHIEVEMENTS EARNED IT a PLACE on OUR FORUM. OKAY, dEd GRIMLEY*, NOW YOU CAN SET ABOUT DEFENDING IT...
"This won't be any more painful than reading the reviews -- or checking out your numbers over at B.O. MoJo..." |

Oh well, at least this is one listed movie that we know won't be "winning" anything.

I saw Sin City and thought it was alright, And 300 was pretty cool. But when I saw the trailer for this beast, I just thought it looked like stupid junk. It's a shame I had no interest in going to any movies this past month, because all the movies at my local theater were stupid, unoriginal and, like...Twilight.

Sin city and 300 were both decent. This one looks like a dumb film. It seems like Frank Miller didn't do a decent job directing on his own. He probably should have had someone else do it.

The Mormons were'nt really popular in the beginning, they're now becoming more popular, even in Hollywood.

You pretty much hit the only two words I could use to defend it -- It certainly wasn't for everyone. I think the way they set about making it look like another comic-book noir movie, and then it turned out to be an action/comedy, made it fail to deliver the movie people expected to see from the marketing of it. I certainly didn't see its failure coming. But even with all that, it WAS something different... More of a manic action/comedy -- something like Lethal Weapon.

Yes, it's a sad thing when the best excuse to see a movie is for you to see the naked rear of your favorite actress on a 50 feet screen, and it's NOT a porno. |

There was an article on Cartoon Brew last month pointing out how, in the early 80s when feature animation was in its absolute doldrums, a couple of renegade animators tried to do The Spirit as a feature, but couldn't get the financial backing for the project. More than a few of them--including a number of subsequent Disney legends such as John Lassiter and John Musker--feel they could have substantially changed the course of animation had they been given a chance with it--certainly it could have been more entertaining than this.

The creators of this film go through a lot of red tape to make the film look like a comic book...and they got
for it.

I put most of the blame on the shoulders of first-time director (or at least first time solo, since he co-directed "Sin City") Frank Miller. Since he also wrote the screenplay, so he's most at fault for the flat dialog and the actor's wooden preformances, just like George Lucas did in the Star Wars prequels. |

Can I be the first female to point out that the Spirit himself was just as hot as the women around him? I mean... DAMN.
