I haven't seen D&D, but I've seen adaptations of non-narrative media. Actually, I recently saw SUPER MARIO BROS, which co-stars Samantha Mathis from ATLAS SHRUGGED PART 2. That movie definately deserved a Razzie. But it wasn't seen by enough people, and that's the key to this whole thing. D&D did make it to the ballots. It's not that it automatically deserves a Razzie for being based on a board game. It deserves it for using the board game as an excuse to create a clichéd plot that didn't need to be attached to the game. I also recently saw BATMAN & ROBIN*. And then I watched Jeremy Jahns' review where he explained the real problem with making a movie and having your mind on the marketing. *It currently ranks #62 (out of 66) on my all-time worst list, right below BATTLESHIP. I suppose that SchumacherH8ter can take that as a Christmas gift.
I did like TRANSFORMERS 1 & 3. Even if I hadn't, the problem isn't that BATTLESHIP has similarities with those movies and we associate them. The problem is that it shows the lack of originality for a visual style. Also, if you pay attention, you'll notice that specific shots are directly copied.
That kind of cross-over is worth of attention to see if it's Razzie-worthy, but it's not automatically Razzie-worthy. Judging a performance can be subjective. Some people bought Rihanna in her role (like me), and others didn't. By the way, Rihanna's best songs are from 2010-12, so you've been missing a lot. And I've seen many award shows and clips from concerts to tell when a singer is really singing or not. Rihanna and Beyoncé rarely use auto-tune live.
If we only talk about him as a director (he's acted in many movies), the R.T. ratings of HANCOCK and VERY BAD THINGS are pretty close to BATTLESHIP's. We're talking about the worst director of the year, not the worst directing of each director's career. In a way, that's why the Worst Career Achievement Award exists. I'm sure Robbins could be a good contender, if his resume wasn't full of mostly forgettable family movies.
[Doing weird gangsta gesture] Yo, GTA! You know you're my man. But dawg, you're doing it again. You clearly mentioned 1000 WORDS and TDI more times than other movies because of their R.T. ratings. Can't really blame you though, since you're actually not the only one. It has to be what we personally hated the most. Did you even see them? BATTLESHIP is hated in more aspects. All 5 main actors are in consideration. In fact, the R.T. concensus says that it's OK for non-demanding audiences, which is excusing the film. And that makes me think that the rating should be lower (I cannot believe that is higher than TRANSFORMERS 2's). The only specific flaw that people remember from TDI (saying things like it's not scary is too general) is the ending, and there's not a category for that. 1000 WORDS is only remembered as "That other Eddie Murphy bomb". TMB is actually on par with BATTLESHIP, because it also has a lot of actors in consideration, but only Sandler is the shoe-in so far. Not to mention that it was more harmful to society because of its messages and how it treated certain topics. At this point there's not an obvious 5th nominee. But no matter which one it is, it obviously won't win because it wasn't a shoe-in like the other 4. Sorry HeadRAZZ. I know you said we shouldn't predict the results yet, but we can't help it with the forum polls, the predictions from other sites, and the fact that we've talked with one another enough to know what we're voting for. |

7 months later, this is looking more and more to me like the film that will eventually "win" Worst Picture at the 2012 RAZZIES. But I must be missing something, because The Devil Inside and particularly A Thousand Words both have more to deserve that title, based on what I've seen.
So here's what I know:
*That this is adapted from a board game. One could argue that in December 2000, a film called Dungeons & Dragons was released. D&D has no ties to Milton-Bradley, Parker Bros., Pressman, or Hasbro that I know of, and is more specifically considered a tabletop game, which was a forerunner of board games. My point is that even though Battleship is a board game adaptation, there were still films that people hated more this past year, and relatively few people would consider Battleship the worst wide release of the year. It is my understanding that those who don't like Battleship outnumber those who do by a paltry 2 to 1, which is bad enough for 2 or 3 RAZZIE nods, but not enough to earn Worst Picture beyond much doubt.
*That this had roughly the same graphic style as the Transformers trilogy, but with little or no involvement from Michael Bay. I can see why most people around here wouldn't like Transformers at all, but most commoners didn't mind Transformers 1, so I don't get the passion against the Transformers franchise that outweighs those films, franchises, and figureheads that the common people (particularly young men, whom Hollywood targeted with the Transformers series) hate far worse, such as Eddie Murphy's recent films, The Devil Inside, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the Street Fighter and Dragonball films, Alvin & the Chipmunks, The Smurfs, and Amanda Sayfried as Riding Hood. *That Rihanna sang such songs as "Pon de Replay", "SOS", "If it's Lovin' that You Want", and "Unfaithful" back in 2005 and 2006. Those are the only four Rihanna songs that I can name, and they're all from way early in her career. In circa 2009, she (and IIRC Beyonce Knowles) took up Autotune or some similar program, and their voices lost all distinction they had before. What could possibly be more unsavory about her that I wouldn't know because I pay so little attention to the music industry? My intuition says there's GOT to be a bigger reason for RAZZing her for Worst Supporting Actress than her feature film debut or her music-to-cinema crossover.
*That director Peter Berg had nothing this bad on his resume before last May, which means he isn't as bad a director as Brian Robbins or William Brent Bell...yet. To sum it up, why can't A Thousand Words, The Devil Inside or That's My Boy beat Battleship for Worst Picture if more people in the commonplace loathed those?
RESPONSE from Head RAZZberry: I would agree with you only so far as BATTLESHIP being a likely finalist for one of our five Worst Picture slots. Beyond that, as I see it, based on decades of experience handicapping these things, Worst Picture (and several other top 2012 dis-honors) are pretty much anyone's to "win." Trying to predict what our members will eventually choose as the 2012's Berry Worst, before even knowing what they've chosen to nominate, seems a bit like putting the proverbial cart before the horse's arse...

Saw it last night. I did not hate it as much as predicted.
Not going to lie, I can get a bit excited over some explosion action. Also, watching it on an ES 8090 with crystal clear picture and mega sound system makes for a rather pleasant experience. What was completely and utterly ridiculous though: - Story was lacking big time, we had tons of questions afterwards, like did the aliens come from the Super Earth, what was their actual plan, why did they not destroy all the ships immediately etc. - The aliens' looks - Scanning the horses, and then a horseshoe blinks up. Where the hell would an alien get that information from? - The tongue-in-cheek stuff. Idiotic! - Those fire chain wheels. - The soundtrack. Misuse of Classic Rock. - A 70 year old "museum ship" is fully functional, loaded with tons of torpedos, and has the original crew ready to blow 24/7? Yeah, right! I did not dislike the movie as much as Devil Inside, Ghost Rider 2 or Transformers 3, but it seems like enough people support it for several nominations anyway. The thing for me is, I have watched Taylor Kitsch in three movies this year. I'm not unsympathetic to him, but he is ripe for a RAZZing. FYC: Taylor Kitsch for Worst Actor, Peter Berg for Worst Director |

I don't participate in the Award thing much, but I'd say Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay.

I forgot to mention that I saw this film recently. I've made one attempt before, but I couldn't make it past the hour mark. With a second try, I finally finished it through the end. The verdict? I hated it. While watching it, I was debating if this or Transformers 3 was worse. I decided Battleship was the winner in that battle. The film is so stupid and an assault to the senses. While Transformers 3 was bad, Battleship felt like a huge infomercial for the Navy. I've seen that criticism used in other films before, but it wasn't until I saw this film that I understood what it meant.
Schumacher told me to wait for the unintentionally hilarious scene dealing with a couple of veterans and "Thunderstruck" playing in the background. I didn't laugh. I shouted in anger. But if there was something positive I have to say about the film, it would be the scenes where the grid was laid out, paying homage to the board game. I thought that part was pretty clever, but it wasn't enough to save the film. As for the actors, you can't really blame them. The script is the main culprit to the film's huge fall. As a joke, someone said the film was secretly directed by Michael Bay. I wouldn't be surprised. I see no essence of Peter Berg ANYWAY in the film. 2/10

Yep. But I didn't know whether it deserved a 0 or a 1 until the very end. Which is why I'm still rooting for GHOST RIDER 2 to win Worst Picture.

I just saw it. For your consideration:
-Worst Actor for Taylor Kitsch (also for JOHN CARTER). -Worst Supp. Actor for Liam Neeson (also for WRATH OF THE TITANS). -Worst Supp. Actor for Gregory D. Gadson. -Worst New Star for Gregory D. Gadson. -Worst Director. -Worst Screenplay. -Worst Remake or Rip-Off (TRANSFORMERS). -Worst Picture. Most of the complains is that the aliens weren't evil. That they seemed to be defending themselves*. Did any of you think that as well? I didn't, but it's because it was hard to pay attention to the plot. *It's not a spoiler, but I wrote it in white because the point of the question is whether you were able to realize it on your own.
Edit: You'd be happy to know that it currently ranks #48 in my list of the worst movies ever made (there's only 50 titles so far). |

RESPONSE from Head RAZZberry: Here's a LINK to read a berry interesting article in The L.A. Times (the movie industry's Local Paper of Record) asking why JOHN CARTER got an avalanche of bad publicity when it bombed, while BATTLESHIP (whose b.o. and budget numbers are berry similar -- and which also, coincidentally, starsTaylor Kitsch) got off all but scott free...

To Grounder: It's not that one. The movie's better than The Number 23 by a decent distance.
To jesse: Tadanobu was bad, but not bad enough to get a mention. Although, the scene where he's "plays" battleship was hilarious!

Who thought that this was a good idea? I'm glad that he or she is probably gonna get fired for this. I'm serious, we can't let them think that adapting board games is a good idea. And, by God, we did. It came in fourth place yesterday with $3 mil. As I mentioned in the One For The Money review, I'm skipping the good section.
Liam Neeson is absolutely wasted here. He must have been literally "wasted" to have agreed to appear in this! The special effects are suprisingly sub-par considering its budget. It's not Underworld: Awakening bad, but still. Rihanna doesn't embaress herself as much as I thought she would, but she still sucks to high heaven. After being the only thing in Just Go With It that I didn't want to beat severely, Brooklyn Decker plays a very anoying character. After this and John Carter, I have to wonder: what the f*ck did Taylor Kitsch do to his agent to piss him off enough to book him into these two movies? His acting is even worse than it was in John Carter. Alexander Skarsgard is slightly better as his on-screen brother, but not good enough to elevate him out of consideration. The story is just stupid. It's not as bad as One For The Money's script, but that's not saying much. Peter Berg is a dissapointment. He should have known better than to stoop to Michael Bay's level. Granted it's slightly better than Trannies 2, but still. Speaking of Transformers, that franchise's success is the only reason this exists. Much like how The Vow is a cash-in on Nicholas Sparks, this only exists because the Transformers series prints money. Only difference is that Transformers was based on the cartoon, while this was based on...nothing. Grade: F
Next-up: A really bad Joel Schumacher movie!! (But not that one!!! You all know what I mean by that.) |
