Some say Captivity,oh no that would be Before the Devil Knows your
Dead. It's torture to watch and of course there is porn at the beginning. My beloved Sidney Lumet from the 70s enters the realm that Scorsese has been in for years. Does anyone remember what these directors did in their hay day. Captivity just wasn't as bad as people have led on. Lohan's torture porn has that nailed down with I know who killed me. So Razzies nods all around for Devil. Picture,Director,Actor(Hoffman,Hawke)Supporting Actor:Finney Supporting Actress:Tomei. Shame There should be a catagory for Worst Picture of People Behaving Badly. |

I found Before the Devil Knows Your Dead to be an excellent movie, but it's a tragedy, watching Hoffman's character implode right before your eyes. If you hate watching self-destructive behavior, don't go, you won't like it. And I wouldn't claim Captivity is better than even the worst movie Sidney Lumet put out, not even Gloria. That's just wrong.

Sorry but I was disappointed that Sidney Lumet's name was on this trash. So
I was trashing trash. Big deal, that's what this site is all about. You certainly can see why Captivity gets more ink because it is Roland Joffe slumming. But Lumet is doing the same here. |

Sorry backatcha. You're right, this site is about trashing trash, but I wholeheartedly disagree with your trashing, as do many others. I'm guessing you showed up hoping for Dog Day Afternoon Part 2 and wound up with something a whole lot darker in a completely different way. De gustibus non disputandum - there's no arguing taste. But taste is a small excuse to equate Captivity with Before the Devil Knows You're Dead just because you're disappointed. |

Don't know if it is just taste. I can be drawn into a celluloid world and dig it
when I probably shouldn't Case in point:Closer. These people are are heels but they were so much fun to watch. A beautiful train wreck. Characters in Devil or We Don't Live Here Anymore, should be loaded up in a van and driven off a cliff and be done with it. Then again, there are people that probably wished that with Closer. Maybe it's Hoffman. Never cared too much for him. Never thought he was much of a talent except for his excellent work in Capote. |

That may be it. I actually like Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He's one of the few newer actors who actually acts, and for me, he does it so well. And you're right about the characters in Devil. There's nothing to like about any of them, except maybe the mother, and she gets killed off before you have a chance to know her. Usually, I hate movies like that, yet although there is part of me that wants to hate that movie, Lumet presented it in a way that I actually admire how the whole thing unfolded. I didn't have to like any of the characters. Not thinking about this until now, I wonder if the beauty isn't in watching the disaster of consequences? Andy should have known better than to trust Hank. Gina should have left Andy rather than have an affair with Hank. Charles should have shown Andy how much he thought of him. Andy should have accepted his father anyway and not let Charles get to him. Hank should not have been such a wimpy whiner. And, of course, Andy should not have gotten into hard drugs. But they didn't, and I find, if I may use the word, a "beauty" in how all their lives crashed and burned in the wake of all these "wouldas, shouldas and couldas."

I have yet to see "Before The Devil Knows Your Dead", but the trailers made it look good. Plus, it already won an award, although it's from Mr. Skin. I have seen "Captivity" and it was one of the worst movies I've seen this year.
