Our fellow geeks at Joblo.com have a section for upcoming movies based on graphic novels. Some of them might be pretty good in the right hands. Unfortunately I doubt anyone would see the good ones.
"Woody Allen, whatever his failings, does not make movies for morons. Most directors do. Of course, most directors are morons."
Aeon Flux (live action) is set to ruin comic/animated characters for good. I suppose after the movie, the series creator will personally rape each audience member as we file out of the theatre.
Not only that, but what is it with Oscar winners? They seem to be cursed to make lousy movies after they win an Oscar:
Halle Berry - from MONSTER's BALL to Catwoman
Hillary Swank - from BOYS DON'T CRY to THE CORE (ugh! I never thought she'd work ever again. Fortunately MILLION DOLLAR BABY saved her.
Jennifer Connolly - BEAUTIFUL MIND to THE HULK (what were you thinking!?)
...and now Charlize Theron, from MONSTER to AEON FLUX. She could have been in the leading role of a Weinstein bros. picture, or start asking for 15 million a movie as an A-list female. Instead, she chose to show off her body. Don't get me wrong, she's hot. But your career won't last long with choices like this...

Sad to say that, because films with any artistic quality whatsoever don't make it at the box office, A-list actors end up doing crap to pay the bills. (An interesting note: look at what happened to both Vin Diesel and Ice Cube after the "XXX" movies.)
The only one who can size a movie up by its trailer.

Great observation, the same thing happens to the males;
Jamie Foxx goes to STEALTH after RAY, Cuba Gooding does crap like SNOWDOGS and THE FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS. I think that the Oscar is in itself a curse that the actor can never recover from. Everything they do afterwards is pure garbage!

I don't know whether to blame America's capitalist economy, (you don't see Sweden making disaster popcorn movies) or the marketing teams. I mean why is it that everything Disney/Pixar does have to be connected with kids meals at fast food joints? Why aren't art movies advertised in the malls during Oscar season like the popcorn movies are during the summer. I swear I must have seen a Fantastic Four tapestry hanging from the ceiling of the mall. One every 50 feet!
I heard somewhere that an Oscar nomination adds X amount to tickets sales and a win in some catergories, like best picture, add even more. Can't the bean counters in hollywood use that to make money on good movies too?

The "Bottom Line" in Hollywood: It's called Show BIZNESS -- They're here to make profit, PERIOD. If winning Festival Awards or Oscars® from their peers helps them make MORE money, fine. But even with all the free media and word-of-mouth generated by MARCH OF THE PENGUINS, its total B.O. to date is a mere $27.5 million -- Compared to about $378 million for STAR WARS: EPISODE III/REVENGE of the SITH. So which of these two films is Tinsel Town likeliest to try and replicate??
What's got the Hollywood Honchos HORRIFIED right now is, they're doing EVERYTHING they can think of to ensure that EVERY movie released is a "blockbuster" -- pandering to audiences, sticking to trite-and-true formulas, shipping up to 4,000 prints of each wide-release title, and plugging the sht out of every film coming down the pike. Yet most of this year's movies have gone down the tubes instead, and 2005's Box Office Total has been A Berry Disappointing BUST.
It'll be interesting to see what, if any, changes come about in the next few years' product as a result of The "Lessons" of 2005...If Hollywood is at all capable of learning from its mistakes, 2005 MAY be the year they finally learn them...just don't hold yer breath!!
Many movie companies know that a flick will tank and bet on making it back in home rental and home sales. You can't tell me no one knew STEALTH would bomb at the box office?

Do you seriously think anyone is going to buy "Stealth"? If the studios knew that a movie was going to bomb, why even release it theatrically? Why not just straight to video?

I think some of the comic book movies commng out are okay... I liked THE HULK, even if it was a little long. SPIDERMAN 2 was great, so was BATMAN BEGINS, they just need the right director... I just wish Hollywood would still make intelligent hororr flix. The last great horror flick was 28 DAYS LATER... and we had to cross the ocean to get it!

I never saw the Hulk and from what I've heard about it, I'm not missing much. I hated Spiderman 2. Mary Jane never wore a dress! She was a tomboy, and the quality was like a made-for-tv movie. Alfred Molina's British accent kept slipping out and I've seen better graphics on Playstation games.
As far as horror movies go, I agree. We need studios to shell out a few extra bucks for some good quality stuff made by a decent director. They did it in the 70s with The Exorcist and The Omen. We'll see how Skeleton Key, Red Eye and The Exorcism of Emily Rose do.

I actually did like THE HULK, I think Ang Lee had his hands tied however, it doesn't seem like he got to do what he really wanted (this happens when Hollywood tries to control Hong Kong directors [see the fall of John Woo]). And I really never liked SPIDER-MAN or the sequel (the same goes for X-MEN) I found them rather silly and the characters felt 2-dimensional (they were more fleshed out on comic paper).
However, I do agree with the lack of intelligent (or even remotely creepy) horror. They have killed the genre, its dead for good. 28 Days LATER was a breathe of fresh air (compared to HOUSE of the DEAD and RESIDENT EVIL), but fell apart at the end. I think that many directors today are quite young and have grown up on Kool-Aid, Ninja Turtles and Mortal Kombat. They don't know what a good story is, nor how to be a good director -- I guess they expect computer effects to wow the audience while the cast and crew stumbles through the plot.
My two favorite comic book movies of all time are SIN CITY and THE CROW. SIN CITY was very well acted and directed, and Brandon Lee would have been a huge star if he hadn't passed away.

I hate to sound like the movie geek in SCREAM, but SIN CITY is technically not a comic book but a graphic novel. I don't know if it was ever released in comic book form but if it was it was an independent like The Authority. Now that I mention it, The Authority might make a good movie... and col. Jenny Sparks is a hot comic book babe...hmm.
I think another graphic novel that should get made is Jinx by Brian Michael Bendis (spider man?) however it should be made for the Sundance crowd by independent film makers.
